A Great Lake Adventure: Have the Perfect Day Exploring Lake Erie

Lake Erie is the fourth-largest lake in the Great Lakes and the tenth-biggest lake in the world. This lake is named after a tribe of Native Americans who lived along the southern shores and it is a very short drive from Dunkirk, New York. Many people choose to stay in the lovely town of Dunkirk while they are visiting Lake Erie, as this town provides easy access to many great attractions.
The Great Lakes are some of the most amazing natural features of North America and they are the ideal playground for those who love the great outdoors. A trip to Lake Erie should always include a visit to the beach, where you can build a sandcastle, get your feet wet in the water and even go for a swim. However, that is not all that this beautiful location has to offer.

Here are some other ideas of what you can do at Lake Erie while you are visiting Dunkirk, New York:

Check Out Chadwick Bay

This bay is located right within Dunkirk. It is named for Solomon Chadwick, who came to the area in 1810 from Weston, MA. This bay is an important symbol of the town and many of the local businesses have incorporated it into their names.
If you are visiting during the first Saturday in August, you can join in the Chadwick Bay Beach Bash at Wright Park Beach. This annual event brings the whole community together and includes a BBQ cook-off, a Little League Baseball Tournament, Live Music and Tug-Of-War. It’s a great opportunity to enjoy some clean family fun on a beautiful summer’s day on the shores of Lake Erie.

Summer Music on the Pier

Another great summer event along the lakeside in Dunkirk is the Summer Music performances. Every June, a live band performs on the pier, creating a fun and lively atmosphere. Previous performances have included a Bon Jovi Tribute, a Bruce Springsteen Tribute and The Beggar’s Best, a power blues trio from Buffalo, NY.

Point Gratiot and Dunkirk Lighthouse

The headland to the west of the harbor is known as Point Gratiot. This is where you will find the US Coast Guard Naval Reserve Station and the Historic Light House, as well as Dunkirk Beach and Point Gratiot Park. This park contains low bluffs and a wide sandy beach, making it a perfect place for a walk on a lovely sunny day.
While you are here, visit the Dunkirk Lighthouse. This historical feature was commissioned in 1875 and it has a lot of historical significance. The first shot of the War of 1812 was fired near here and it is also where the first soldier killed in that war is buried. There is a museum there, filled with interesting military artifacts.
These are a few of the great Lake Erie attractions that can be found in the city of Dunkirk, for a perfect summer day by the lakeside.
