One of the stars is photographer Marat Duri who was born on October 25, 1991 and belongs to the generation in Russia that grew up after the breakup of the Soviet Union and only learned about communism through textbooks.
“I was a sickly child, and didn’t develop well due to a lack of vitamins and environmental pollution. I had a weak heart. The doctors told me I couldn’t play sports; it was like a lifelong punishment.
I often went to see movies, but I found them boring. Then I searched online to see what kinds of subcultures were out there. I found 'roofing' exciting, and I found someone who took me onto my first roof. I had to climb 48 stories to get to the top of the building. I was tired after that, but happy. Roofing has kept me healthy. My heart beats better.”
“What we do is a bit anarchistic. We defy the security guards. When we go onto especially well-guarded buildings, we sometimes get arrested ... even by agents of the the FSB and FSO (ed’s note: Russia’s domestic intelligence agency and presidential security service, respectively).”

UFO: The Musician Who Went To Space
In 1975, Jim Sullivan, a promising musician, mysteriously disappeared without a trace just outside the town of Santa Rosa, New Mexico. To this day, no one knows where he went or what happened to him and his body has never been found. It’s almost as if he was sucked into space..Jim’s debut album, which was released in 1969, was entitled U.F.O.. Jennifer Maas writes an intriguing article about Jim and defines U.F.O as, “a slice of American pop music filtered from the murky depths of Los Angeles, by way of the deep- south.” Now I’m no music buff or anything, nor do I delve deep into the hidden meanings of songs or anything like that. I simply call it like I see it. Or in this case, like I hear it. Listening to this song I could only hear a hippy. However, the tune is actually quite catchy. You can hear the entire album at Light In the Attic, a great site that re-leases hard to find music and gets them the attention today that they deserved yesterday.

Clearly, Jim Sullivan was a very talented musician, and before long he had caught the Hollywood bug. He hung out with famous celebrities, played music with them, even getting a brief cameo in Easy Rider. He had everything going for him except a credible label. Too many of them already had their own “Jim Sullivans”, musicians with a sound close to Jim’s… probably because Jim was playing on half their albums. Even after he and friend created their own label, releasing their own albums as a last ditch resort, they still didn’t get the attention they wanted. However, throughout the course of his attempts at stardom, Jim had made contacts in Nashville that provided the opportunity to make or break his career. Leaving his wife and family back in California, Jim set out on an adventure from which he would never return.
They found his car abandoned. Everything Jim had was still in his vehicle, parked 26 miles outside the town of Santa Rosa, New Mexico, but he was nowhere to be found. Some reports said that Jim was pulled over by the police because he was swerving back and forth between lanes. Later, the officer stated that Jim was just tired from his travels, and rather than ticket him, the officer gave him directions to the nearby La Mesa Motel, where it’s been verified that he checked in.Still, there were also reports that he was questioned by a local family as to why his car was parked either on or near their property. The family in question were the Genetti’s, who were often said to have local mafia ties. Whether or not there was a confrontation between the two that led to sour mouths is unclear.
But there it was: a car filled with belongings that had no driver. Even his 12 string guitar was left behind. As someone who dabbles in playing music, I can understand how important a musician’s instrument is. I could never think about ditching my guitar like that, and for a musician such as Jim, who most likely treasured that possession more than family, leaving it behind doesn’t seem to make sense.
“With or without his disappearance, there’s something in those lyrics that is incredibly mysterious and eerie,” Matt Sullivan, Jim’s son, told NPR. “One thing that one of Jim’s friends pointed out was that the guitar was left in the car. If Jim was going to disappear, that would have been the one thing that he would have taken, because wherever he was in the world, he could always stand on a street corner and make a few bucks playing his guitar.”
Search parties were conducted by the local authorities and Jim’s family. They couldn’t find any trace of him, and to this day, it’s almost as if Jim dissipated into thin air. For a time, investigators believed that a badly decomposed body found in the desert might have belonged to Jim, but after extensive forensics, it was ruled out.
Some musicians can work their entire lives and never reach the level of fame they seek in their own country, but can go on to be wildly successful in others, thus the saying “big in Japan”. Well, maybe Jim just happened to be “big in space”. On “U.F.O”, Sullivan sings about driving his car into the desert, his family left behind, and getting abducted by aliens. Maybe, just maybe, the Greys liked his tunes so much they were happy to oblige.
I’m sure they had a better guitar for him to use.

Kjeragbolten boulder: Afraid of heights? This will make your knees shudder [VIDEO]
The Kjeragbolten boulder is a huge rock wedged more than 1000 meters up between two cliff faces. The boulder is situated in the Kjerag mountain, in Norway.
Rumours say that the rock got stuck there sometime during the last ice age. Today, it’s one of the most popular places to get your picture taken. Even though the boulder hangs more than a kilometer above the water below, and there’s no hand rail or safety net, people walk (in some cases, crawl) out onto the rock for a photo shoot. Evidently the rock’s surface is flat enough that walking out onto it is relatively easy. Just mind your steps and don’t look down. If you get dizzy, you lose your balance and fall into the chasm below.
This area of Norway is absolutely gorgeous! Kjeragbolten is reachable from the Kjerag plateau, a peak that towers above all others in the Lysefjord area. The plateau has become a popular BASE jumping site. But several BASE jumping accidents happen here each year, and BASE jumping from the plateau may eventually become illegal. But if you don’t plan to jump from the plateau, you can simply take in an incredible view of the blue fjords below, the surrounding mountain cliffs, and, weather permitting, an azure sky. The climb to the plateau isn’t easy. The hike is a short 3.6 miles (6 kilometers), but it’s a vertical one; there’s an elevation change of 1,500 feet (500 meters) between start and finish.
To add to the intrigue of the Kjerag mountain, there’s a place near the summit where you’ll hear the sound of a pistol and even see smoke. It’s not a ghost shooting at you. It’s just the wind, blowing in from the east.

Hydropolis Underwater Hotel: Worlds First Luxury Underwater Hotel in Dubai
Hydropolis will be the world’s first luxury underwater hotel. It will include three elements: the land station, where guests will be welcomed, the connecting tunnel, which will transport people by train to the main area of the hotel, and the 220 suites within the submarine leisure complex. It is one of the largest contemporary construction projects in the world, covering an area of 260 hectares, about the size of London’s Hyde Park.
“Hydropolis is not a project; it’s a passion,” enthuses Joachim Hauser, the developer and designer of the hotel. His futuristic vision is about to take shape 20m below the surface of the Persian Gulf, just off the Jumeirah Beach coastline in Dubai.
The £300m, 220-suite hotel was due to open by the end of 2006 but has experienced delays and is now scheduled to open in 2009. It will incorporate a host of innovations that will take it far beyond the original blueprint for an underwater complex worthy of Jules Verne.
The original idea for Hydropolis developed out of Hauser’s passion for water and the sea, and goes much deeper than just building a hotel underwater. More than just curiosity, it is a commitment to a more far-reaching philosophy. “Once you start digging deeper and deeper into the subject, you can’t help being fascinated and you start caring about all the associated issues,” he explains. “Humans consist of 80% water, the earth consists of 80% water; without water there is no life.”
In order to enter this surreal space, visitors will begin at the land station. This 120m woven, semicircular cylinder will arch over a multi-storey building. On the lowest level passengers board a noiseless train propelled by fully automated cable along a modular, self-supporting steel guideway to Hydropolis. The upper storeys of the land station house a variety of facilities, including a cosmetic surgery clinic, a marine biological research laboratory and conference facilities. On the lower levels are the staff rooms, goods storage and loading areas, and hotel and parking areas.
The land station also includes a restaurant and high-tech cinema screening the evolution of life in the ocean and the history of underwater architecture. As a finale, the screen will open to reveal the real-life Hydropolis. A viewing platform at the front opening of the spanning roof will allow views of the architecture as well as the light shows of Hydropolis.
Hauser plans to incorporate many different elements associated with the sea. The cosmetics will be ocean-based, the cinemas will screen films that focus on aquatic themes and a children’s seaworld will educate as well as entertain.
He views his creation as a place where those who do not dive – or do not even swim – can experience the tranquillity and inspiration of the underwater world. “We are expecting around 3,000 visitors a day in addition to the hotel guests. The aim is to inspire people to develop a new awareness of the sea.”

AMAZING CREATURES-WEIRD FISH WITH TRANSPARENT HEAD
The fish, discovered alive in the deep water off California's central coast by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), is the first specimen of its kind to be found with its soft transparent dome intact.
The 6-inch (15-centimeter) barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) had been known since 1939--but only from mangled specimens dragged to the surface by nets.

Chinese farmer walks 5,000 ducks to a nearby pond [VIDEO]
The mini migration was timed to avoid rush hour but commuters could not help but get caught up in the parade.
At one point, several scooters were marooned in a sea of brown but the ducks’ feathers remained unruffled – or maybe the riders were just winging it.
Farmer Hong – who was armed with just a (very) long stick and a few assistants – managed to make the journey without losing a single duck en route to the water.
And he boasted that, incredibly, he had not lost a duck in the past six months while making the trip.
He regularly undertakes the perilous journey in the booming coastal city of Taizhou, in China’s Zhejiang province, about 305km (190 miles) south of Shanghai.
Just ponder on that traffic nightmare the next time you find your own feathers being ruffled when you’re stuck in a jam.

An hour from Beijing, the dusty village of Banjiehe looks an unlikely place to produce scientific innovation.
Its rows of brick, utilitarian houses are surrounded by cornfields and fruit trees.
But in a small tractor workshop, 55-year-old farmer Tang Zhenping has invented the prototype of a car that he believes could revolutionise China’s auto industry.
Mr Tang’s model – built in just three months for around £1,000 – is electric.

River over River in Germany: The Magdeburg Water Bridge [VIDEO]
The Magdeburg Water Bridge in Germany deserves a special mention. Opened in October 2003 and part of the Magdeburg crossing of waterways, it connects the Elbe-Havel Canal to the Mittellandkanal, crossing over the Elbe River. With a total length of 3,012 feet or 918 meters, it’s the longest navigable aqueduct in the world.
The Elbe–Havel Canal and Mittelland Canal canals had previously met near Magdeburg but on opposite sides of the Elbe, which was at a significantly lower elevation than the two canals. Ships moving between the two had to make a 12-kilometre detour, descending from the Mittelland Canal through the Rothensee boat lift into the Elbe, then sailing downstream on the river, before ascending to the Elbe-Havel Canal through Niegripp lock. Low water levels in the Elbe often prevented fully laden canal barges from making this crossing, requiring time-consuming off-loading of cargo.
The reunification of Germany and establishment of major water transport routes made the Water Bridge a priority again. Work started in 1997, with construction taking six years and costing €500 million. The water bridge now connects Berlin’s inland harbour network with the ports along the Rhine river.

Pufferfish are generally believed to be the second most poisonous vertebrates in the world, after the golden poison frog. Certain internal organs, such as liver, and sometimes the skin, are highly toxic to most animals when eaten; nevertheless, the meat of some species is considered a delicacy in Japan (known as fugu), when prepared by chefs who know which part is safe to eat and in what quantity.

Pufferfish are poor swimmers, but can quickly ingest huge amounts of water to turn themselves into a virtually inedible ball several times their normal size.

The Blue Dragon (Glaucus atlanticus): one of the rarest and most beautiful molluscs [VIDEO]
The Glaucus atlanticus is a mollusc that belongs to the ocean-dwelling group called nudibranchs. They have muscular feet and rhinophores, or the tentacles. The Blue Sea Slug has adapted physically to suit its needs. One great adaptation is the sac located in its stomach filled with gas, helping it stay afloat as drifting along the ocean waves is its only real mode of transportation.
The Sea Swallow also feeds on animals with deadly nematocysts (stinging cells) and some of these are dangerous suckers. These dangerous prey are called Blue Bottles or, sometimes, Portuguese Man O' Wars. The Glaucus atlanticus is immune to nematocysts, thus giving it the ability to consume its prey, as well as store its dinner's venom for its own defense! The venom is collected by the tips of the slug's 'fingers', called cerata, and stored in specialized sacs. This is why the Blue Sea Slug is feared more than the Portuguese Man O' War and can leave you with a much deadlier sting, depending on the amount of venom it has stored.
One of the most distinctive characteristics of this animal is the way it lies in the water. Glaucus atlanticus floats upside-down! Its dorsal surface (backside) is actually its 'foot' and belly and is either blue or blueish-white in color. The true dorsal surface of the Sea Swallow is a silvery-greyish color. Both coloration on each side help camouflage and protect it from both underwater and aerial predators. The ocean's surface from above looks blue and white because of the waves, but underwater, darker colors like silver and grey make it harder for prey to be spotted.
When out of water, they tend to roll into little balls and open up again once they are placed back into water. They also slowly turn themselves over in water if their silver-grey surface is facing skyward.
As in the case of most sea slugs, Glaucus atlanticus too are hermaphodite, allowing both slugs to produce egg strings after mating. Glaucus atlanticus can grow up to 40-50mm and are found all over the world in temperate to tropical waters. Glaucuses lay their eggs on driftwood or even the skeletons of their victims or on objects or animals that remain afloat to allow their young to develop until they have their own air sacs.
