They say that the Golden Globe Awards are a sure-fire indication of who will win big when the Oscars roll around a month later. So considering Anne Hathaway picked up the glitzy gong for Best Supporting Actress thanks to her star turn in Les Miserables, odds are in her favour. But forget the accolades. Here on the Fashion Desk, we want to know whether Hathers will pull out a winner on the red carpet. For a true assessment, we've returned to the pictures archives to uncover Anne's Oscar gowns through the years.
Back in February 2009, we saw the actress looking like a shimmering mermaid in a jewel-encrusted dress by Giorgio Armani [centre]. She might not have won an award on that occasion but the gown garned praise as one of the Best Oscar dresses of all time and even bagged its own Wiki page. It's certainly beautiful but don't you feel like you've seen it on a gazillion red carpets since?
A year earlier, in 2008, we saw Anne in a red Marchesa gown with rose detailed one-shoulder strap. 'Annie picked the dress herself,' said designer Georgina Chapman at the time. 'Because we didn’t want anything to take away from the sweep of the flowers against her gorgeous skin, we selected delicate Harry Winston diamonds for her to wear.' It certainly worked wonderfully with her fresh-as-flower beauty and was sumptuously feminine, but her style was ready to mature along with her more adult movie roles.
Or was it? Because for the 2011 shindig, our Anne was back in a similiar red floor-sweeper, this time created by her designer pal Valentino. It featured a swishy train, another dose of floral appliqué and a matching red lip, cementing Hathaway's red carpet formula as classic old Hollywood glamour. Yep, Anne has a signature style and she was darn well sticking to it.
But! Now that Anne's gone for the chop, here at Grazia Daily, we're crossing all crossables that the actress will surprise us all by upping the ante at this year's ceremony. One thing's for sure, the star's style has seen somewhat of an update since she cut off her long locks for the Les Mis role. 'There isn’t a collared shirt that I don’t love right now and I like the Last Gentleman look more than ever,' she said of her new 'do. Ooh. Might this mean she'll ditch her princessy style and go for something - gasp! - edgier? The star's recent red carpet turns have certainly seen her getting more adventurous, from draped or plunging necklines to an unexpected outing in Tom Ford's kinky bondage boots.
So let's hope Anne makes the most of her new found pixie edge and adds a little punk to her Oscars ensemble. Considering her stylist is Rachel Zoe, some sharp tailoring would go down a treat and there's no doubt she would pull it off marvellously now that she's avec crop. C'mon Annie, let's step it up for 2013, yeah? Let us know what you'd like to see Anne wearing in the box below...
