Mallika Sherawat (born on October 24, 1976 as Reema Lamba) is an Indian actress and a former model. Known for her bold onscreen attitude in such films as Khwahish (2003) and Murder (2004) Sherawat has been frequently featured in the media as a sex symbol. She then appeared in successful romantic comedy Pyaar Ke Side Effects (2006) which won her much critical acclaim.
Since then, she has appeared in successes like Aap Ka Suroor - The Real Love Story, Welcome (both 2007)- her biggest commercial success so far- and Double Dhamaal (2011). She is one of the few Bollywood stars trying to crossover to Hollywood, with films like Hisss (2010) and Politics of Love (2011).
Mallika Sherawat was born into a Jatt family in Rohtak, located in the state of Haryana. Her family is of a renowned philanthropist and holds quite a reputation in the zone. The year of her birth is doubtful. Mallika took up the screen name and added her mother’s maiden surname to it, to avoid being introduced in the film world as Reema, , a name which is quite contrary to her persona and attitude. She has always had a very strained relationship with her family, who quite disapprove of her choice of profession and mostly her sexually bold avatar she has adopted post- Bollywood. Her family was apparently quite disappointed with her for her failed marriage as well. Mallika’s earlier part of her career in Bollywood is full of controversies and mixed voices. While some give her credit to be a small town naïve and raw girl who has found success in Bollywood, others say she presented a fabricated image of a fighter and has played unfair to thrive.
She was first noticed in “Khwahish” in the year 2003, for appearing in a bold avatar, with minimal clothes and hot make-out scenes with her co-actor. In 2004, she continued to delve into sexual boldness on screen, as she played an unfaithful wife in “Murder”. She became a favorite girl with the Bhatt’s and the film raked huge profits at the box office that year. She had previously also worked in an array of commercials like Santro, BPL and so on with Bollywood biggies like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan. One can never miss Mallika Sherwat for the sheer confidence she oozes in her presence. Love her or hate her, she is full of charming dynamism.
2005, was big for her as she starred opposite Jackie Chan in “The Myth”. This was her first international venture. She walked the red carpet at Cannes and Time Magazine declared her as the next big thing. 2005 was her lucky charm of a year.
In 2006, she was noticed playing a simple Delhi girl in the romantic comedy “Pyaar Ke Side Effects” opposite the multi talented Rahul Bose. The film’s flow was catchy and the style was full of humor. And at every point Mallika matched up to Bose’s level of performance with ease.
In 2007, she was seen in “Welcome” which was a huge success at the box office. In 2009, she was seen in the Hollywood Venture “Hisss” with Irfan Khan. It was a crossover film, between India and U.S.A and created ripples in the film world. In 2011, she was seen in “Politics of Love”, a romantic comedy centered on Barack Obama’s election as the President. In 2009, she was also bestowed upon the Honorary Citizenship of Los Angeles for her inexplicable work in films and also for her charitable demeanor.
In 2011, she was also seen opposite Sanjay Dutt in “Double Dhamal”. The film was a huge hit and her item number “Jalebi Bai” had everyone dancing to it.
Sherawat has always been noted as someone who is very outspoken and opinionated. She is hardworking and one of Bollywood’s most ravishing sex bombs. She will soon be seen opposite Vivek Oberoi in “Kismat Love Paisa Dilli”Sherawat was born Reema Lamba in Moth a small village in Hisar district of Haryana to a Jat family. Mallika was born to Mukesh Kumar Lamba in the family of Seth Chhaju Ram, a leading Jat philanthropist. She was born on 24 October 1976. She adopted the screen name of "Mallika", meaning "empress", to avoid confusion with other actresses named Reema. "Sherawat" is her mother's maiden name She has stated that she uses her mother's maiden name because of the support that her mother has provided her. Although relations with her family were strained when she entered the film industry, now Sherawat's family have accepted her career choice and reconciled their relations.
Sherawat went to school at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road. She has obtained a degree in philosophy from Miranda House, Delhi University. During the initial days of her career, she claimed to have come from a very conservative small town family, and that she faced many hurdles from her family in pursuing her career. However, Mallika's family has refuted this as a story created by her to give her an aura of a small town rustic girl who made it big in Bollywood. In order to acquire the tag of India's sex symbol, Mallika Sherawat has virtually dropped her clothes. Earlier known as Reema Lamba, she started out as a small-time model and actress from Delhi, before she re-christened herself Mallika Sherawat.
A small-town girl (from Rohtak in Haryana), Mallika always had stars in her eyes and was determined to pursue the glamour profession and give it all it took to make it. Even though her conservative father was dead against her decision, Mallika defied his wishes and moved to Mumbai to carve a niche for herself in the big bad world of showbiz. Very few would know that she not only defied her father’s wishes, but also walked out of her marriage with Jet Airways pilot Captain Karan Singh Gill in Delhi to pursue her dream. Mallika, then called Reema, had married Karan soon after she completed her graduation from Miranda House, Delhi University and was working as a part time airhostess.
With good reason, Mallika displayed enough skin to make her one of the 'hottest' actresses in the Hindi film industry today. Mallika debuted in a small role in Vashu Bhagnani's Jeena Sirf Mere Liye, but it was Khwahish and her dare bare attitude with co-actor Himanshu Mallik that brought her fame in Bollywood.
At 21, Mallika was on the cover page of an international magazine, Snoop, and the Indian edition of Cosmopolitan. And all this before her debut film had even hit the marquee. Truly outstanding for a girl, who does not come from a famous film family and has no godfather.
Then Mahesh Bhatt's thriller Murder directed by Anurag Basu has put Mallika in an unconventional act. A story of a lonely married woman having an affair, the film had shades of celebration, of blossoming passion, love and insecurity. Murder became the top grosser of 2004 raising Mallika’s popularity immensely, this time people were taking note of her acting skills along with the bold scenes in the movie.
While the publicity machinery going berserk promoting Mallika’s next film Kiss Kiss Ki Kismat as a sizzling sexually simmering synthesis of the two Jat actors Dharmendra and Mallika Sherawat, the fact is the twosome play father-in-law and daughter-in-law in the film.
Barely two films old, Mallika has not only established herself in Bollywood, she is also going international having bagged Jackie Chan’s next film The Myth (earlier titled Time Breaker). Audacious, vulnerable, and with tons of oomph, Mallika has the code to hack the 'Succeed in Bollywood' password.
This girl from Harayana has surprised everyone by her immense and immediate success. If media attention is the barometer of stardom then Mallika Sherawat is by far the biggest star of Bollywood at the moment. The print medium and its visual counterpart are busy lapping up every pearl of wisdom that the ‘Murder Mademoiselle’ utters. She knows how to shock, and…well…the Indian middleclass loves to be shocked.
